Question
CsrA-mediated regulation of nleA is controlled by the release of effector molecules into an attached host cell through T3SS.
a. What other signals could an E. coli cell use to ‘sense’ it was near/attached to a host cell?
b. How could this signal trigger changes in gene expression? Describe a potential signaling system (i.e. could it be a two-component system? Could the signal simply diffuse? Would it require a second messenger?)

& Host cell attachment elicits posttranscriptional regulation in infecting enteropathogenic bacteria
Explanation / Answer
A) apart from nleA, gfp signals also help in the signals to E.coli, to sense the nearby environment. Also, blaM is also checked for translocation and expression along with beta lactamase, thus it is also involved in signals for attachment.
B) galactosidase specific activity was determined which was proportional to BlaM fusions in bacteria. The expression system for beta galactoidase can be via the lactose expression system, though it is not mentioned in the research paper, in which the signalling molecule would be lactose, that would act as the second messenger.
