3)

A. Suppose that a group of males was engaged in a series of fights, and male A emerged as the dominant individual. Now suppose that a female assessed all the males involved in fights and chose male A. Why might this example blur the distinction between intersexual selection and intrasexual selection? (20 pts)

B. Select a species of your preference. Describe how sexual selection (intersexual and intrasexual selection) operates in this species. Describe social behaviors present in this species.

Explanation / Answer

Because male A could be considered to have been selected intrasexually via besting the other males, or intersexually via female choice. If the male won breeding right it would be clear intrasexual selection. If the female choice wasen't based on the outcome of intrasexual competition is would be clear intersexual selection. If this case you apparently have intrasexual competition reinforced by intrasexual selection for physical dominance. b.)INTRA = within INTER = between Intrasexual selection is selection within the same sex. For example, some male animals compete against one another, physically, for access to females. So something like big antlers, huge sharp teeth, or similar weaponry that can be used against other males of the species as a means of mating with females is a selective advantage. Intersexual selection is selection between the two sexes. For example, the bright plumage of a male peacock does not help it physically overcome rival males. But female peacocks tend to prefer male peacocks with bright plumage: a brightly colored male peacock has a selective advantage. It is selection based on one sex of the species preferring some characteristic in the other sex of the species.
