Question
Chapter 14, Question 20 (incorrect question in solution manual): an object can be hung from a string with a linear mass density of 0.00200 kg/m that passes over a light pulley. The string is connected to a vibrator (of constant frequency f), and the length of the string between point P and the pulley is L = 2.00m. When the mass m of the object is either 16.0kg or 25.0kg, standing waves are observed, but no standing waves are observed with any mass between these values. (a) What is the frequency of the vibrator? (b) What is the largest object mass for which standing waves could be observed?Explanation / Answer
let the frequency of the vibrator be f.
let it be in its nth overtone,so
f=(n)/2l (T/)^1/2
so , f=(n)/2l *(25g/)^1/2
and f=(n+1)/2l (16g/)^1/2
so n= 4, and f=280Hz
maximum mass=64 kg
