Question
Contrast the feeding on land versus feeding under water. What anatomical characteristics are importnat in each case?
Please focus on vertebrates-- specifically squamata and amphibia if possible. Thanks!
ive come up with:
- the ability to breathe underwater (amphibians can respire through skin so they dont have to hold their breathe or can breathe while their mouth is occupied)
-mode to detect prey in water, such as a lateral line (frogs have them)
-ability to swim vs. ability to run
-land-- having a tongue that can detect prey, such as snakes or a tongue you can project (with a "sticky" pad on end to catch prey) - some salamanders, frogs, lizards.
Explanation / Answer
Vertebrates a the species having spinal cord surrounded by cartilage or bone. Vertebrates may includes birds, fish, amphibians, mammals and reptiles. Coming to the focu point which you have asked regarding Squamata and amphibia,,,,,,, Squamata are the most diverse of all reptile groups. These includes lizards, snakes, worms etc...approximately 7400 living species. Squamata has two characteristics one is, they can shed their skin periodically and some can shed their skin in one piece eg; snakes. The rest of species shed their skin in to pieces eg: Lizards. The second characteristic is they have unique skull and jaws which are really very strong. As they hunt thier predators, their body support them very easily and can extend thier jaws in to three times larger while having thier delicious meal. The closest relatives of squamata is tuatra, followed by crocodiles and birds.Squamatas posses to holes on both sides of skull known as temporal fenestra.
Coming to amphibia, they can live on both land and water and unlike warm blooded animals they possess cold blood nature. They derive heat from outside and they are also known as exothermic animals. The nature of thier skin is smooth, hairless and they are having mucus glands and poisonous glands. In some amphibians we can found ribs and in some we cannot because they don have ribs. They have a three chambered heart, two artria and one ventricle.Body temperature is exothermic in nature and amphibians are the only species which undergo metamorphosis.
