Question

ive been working on this for a week, and im stuck I have no idea what im doing! PLEASE HELP 1. write newtons second law for the special case in which an object is in equilibruim 2. resolve each of the 2 force vectors below into x- and y- components and find the vector sum. (vector a is 11.0N and B is 14.2 N) (vector B is at a 60 degree angle with respect to A Vector X component for each A B A+B Y component for each A B A+B A B A+B 3. Calculate the magnitude and direction of the resultant vector sum, A + B. Show all work 4. deteremine the magnitude and direction of the third vector C, which reults in equilibruim situation when all three vector forces are acting on the same object (use your results from part 3 so that you do not need to perform any more calculations

Explanation / Answer

In words, Newton's 2nd Law states that "the acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the net force applied, and inversely proportional to the object's mass." In equation form: a= Fnet / mass now since a body is in equilibrium ... the net force on it will be zero ..i.e Fnet = 0 this means the a = Fnet /mass = 0 so a body in equilibrium will remain in rest if it was in rest before or will continue its motion with fixed velocity as it was doing before equilibrium ... ------------------ 2 A = 11 (angle =0) B = 14.2 (angle =60) A+B = 21.88 (angle = 34.19 degrees) x components : Ax = 11 N Bx = 14.2 cos(60)=7.1 N (A+B)x = 18.1 N (adding x components of A and B ) y components :: Ay = 0 By = 12.3 N (A+B)y = 12.3 N ------------------ with vector A and B and C ,the body is in equilibrium .. hence A + B +C = 0 (NET FORCE ON BODY = 0 ) A+B = -C BUT A+B = 21.88 (angle = 34.19 degrees) HENCE C = -(A+B) = 21.88 (angle = 145.81 degrees)
