Question

A skier starts from rest at the top of a frictionless incline of height 20.0 m, as shown in the figure. At the bottom of the incline, the skier encounters a horizontal surface where the coefficient of kinetic friction between skis and snow is0.2. Neglect air resistance.

(b) How far does the skier travel on the horizontal surface before coming to rest?99.5m

NEED THIS ANSWER, please show in detail!

Use the values from PRACTICE IT to help you work this exercise. Find the horizontal distance the skier travels before coming to rest if the incline also has a coefficient of kinetic friction equal to 0.2. Assume that?= 20.0

Explanation / Answer

Ei + Wf = 0

Wf now has to parts W incline and W bottom

W incline = - friction * d = - u N d

N on the slope = m g cos(theta)

and d = h/sin(theta)

so W incline = - u m g cos(theta) * h/(sin(theta))

mgh - u m g cos(theta) * h/(sin(theta)) - u m g d = 0

9.81*20 - 0.2*9.81*cos(20)*20/(sin(20)) - 0.2*9.81*d = 0

solve for d

d=45.05 m
