Question
In the lab, we have injected high speed electrons into a uniform magnetic field in a direction perpendicular to the magnetic field. Which of the following is correct about the interaction between the electrons and the magnetic field? a)Because the Lorentz force slows down the electrons, the speed of the electrons decreases. b)Because the electrons are injected in the direction perpendicular to the direction of the magnetic field, the magnitude of the Lorentz force is always zero. c)Because the Lorentz force accelerates the electrons, the speed of the electrons increases. d)None of the above.Explanation / Answer
Option A is the 100% correct choice.a)Because the Lorentz force slows down the electrons, the speed of the electrons decreases
The force acting is given by : F = qVB sin(theta)
Now theta = 90 degrees
hence a force is acting which will cause acceleration of the electron. Since the charge on the elctron is negative hence the force is in the opposite direction causing retardation hence its speed will decrease.
