Question

Spaceship I, which contains students taking a physics exam, approaches Earth with a speed of 0.610 c, while spaceship II, which contains instructors proctoring the exam, moves away from Earth at 0.220 c, as in Figure P26.27. If the instructors in spaceship II stop the exam after 60 min have passed on their clock, how long does the exam last as measured by (a) the students? (**I have one last attempt..)

Explanation / Answer

Do time dilation for the instructors to find 'proper' time

t = t'(1/sqrt (1 - .220^2))

t = 60(1/sqrt (1 - .220)^2)

t = 61.5 min

Now for the students

61.5 = t'(1/sqrt (1 - .610^2))

t' = 48.7 min
