Question
Like Earth wasps, the space wasps have a system of inheritance known as “haplodiploidy” in which haploid males are produced from unfertilized eggs and diploid females are produced from fertilized eggs.
Each female makes a single mating flight, during which she collects—from one or multiple males—sperm that she uses to fertilize eggs throughout her life. Male space wasps also make a single mating flight during which they may fertilize one or more females.
Fill in the following table with the probability that two individual space wasps share zero, one, or two alleles of the nuclear genome identically by descent. In the rightmost column, labelled r, give the relatedness coefficient of the two individuals.
0 1 2 r Brothers N/A Full sisters Half sisters (same mother) Half sisters (same father)Explanation / Answer
as wasps are haplodiploids that is the male are haploids and female deploids
sharing of nuclear alleles will be 100% from male when the offspring is girl or a boy
and the nuclear allele sharing from female will be 50% for both girl and boy
so for the brothers who share their mother and father
the coeffecient of relatedness is 1/4 which can be give a score 1 in the table
when we see sisters they share more genes as they are diploid in nature
thus the coeffecient of relatedness will be 3/4 thus a score of 2 can be given in the table
half sisters with same mother and different father when considered will acquire their fathers genetic allele 50%
so they differ with each other by 50%
thus their relatedness score will be 1/6 thus a score of 0 can be assigned in the table
however, for half sisters with same father the relatedness score will be 1/2 as the father alleles are conserved
thus a score of 1 can be assigned in the table
full brother 1
full sister 2
half sister (mother) 0
half sister (father) 1
