Question
Suppose that the gas pressure in a container of fixed volume increased from 80 cm of mercury to 85 cm of mercury as the gas was heated from 30 degrees to 50 degrees Celcius. What value of absolute zero would be calculated from this data? (Hint: Find the slope = (delta P)/(delta T). Then find what would have been the pressure at 0 degrees C. Note that the pressure decreases 5 cm of mercury for a 20 degree temperature drop. When the slope and intercept are known, use the method of solving for y=0 in the equation y=mx+b to find the aboslute zero).
Explanation / Answer
slope = (delta P)/(delta T) = 85-80/(50-30) = 1/4
P = m *T +c
50 = 1/4*80 +c
c = 30
equation of pressure temperature line
P = 1/4*T + 30
at T = 0
P = 0+30
P = 30
for P = 0
we put it in the equation
0 = 0.25*T +30
T = -120 C
