Question

You are in a nightmare in which you are in a slow-moving truck being chased by a dinosaur in that infamous scene from "Jurassic Park". However, you did have the presence of mind to have installed a flat rear-view mirror so as to get an accurate impression of the distance of things chasing you. This mirror is 175 mm tall and is 1.000 m from your eyes when you are driving. If the image of the dinosaur is just filling the mirror vertically, what is the distance of the dinosaur from your mirror (in meters) if the dinosaur is, in fact, 17.0 m tall.

Explanation / Answer

height of image = hi = 0.175 m

height of object = ho= 17m

distance of image = di = 1 m

distance of object = do =

first find do

(ho/hi) = (do/di)

so do = (ho/hi)(di)

if you just put the value of do into capa, it's probably wrong. this is the trick to the question:

take the value of do, then subtract di.

the distance of dinosaur from mirror is thus (do) - (di)

for you... that would be (18/0.175)(1) - (1) meters

ans = 101.85 m
