Standing waves can be formed by reflecting light from a mirror and allowing the reflected wave to interfere with the incoming wave. Suppose that we do so usuing light with a wavelength of 500nm (5* 10^-7m). Assume that there is a node at the mirror surface.

a. How far from the mirror will the first antinode lie?

b. What is the separation distance between adjacent antinodes(right fringes) as we move away from the mirror?

c. Will it be easy to observe the dark and bright fringes associated with the nodes and antinodes of the standing wave? Explain.

a)

the distance between mirror and first antinode is =lambda/4

=5*10^-7/4

=1.25*10^-7 m

b)

the distance between adjacent antinode is=lambda/2

=5*10^-7/2

=2.5*10^-7 m
