Question
A concrete highway is built of slabs 10m long (20 ?C). How wide should the expansion cracks between the slabs be (at 20 ?C) to prevent buckling if the range of temperature is - 30?C to +46?C? This is the Coefficient of Expansion from my book. 12x10^-6. I've tried this. (12x10^-6)(10)(46-20) = . 00312 (12x10^-6)(10)(-30-20) = -.006. I add them up and it comes out to .00912. I took absolute value of the second one. But it's still incorrect. I've attempted it several times at this point I just want the maximum points I can get. PLEASE HELPExplanation / Answer
delta Xmax = 10m * 12 * 10-6 * (46 - 20)
= 10m * 12 * 10-6 * 26
= 3.12 * 10-3 m
