Pick one specific device and discuss how well its interface is designed and how easy it is to use. Does the device use the same techniques as computer system interfaces, such as menus and icons? 1.Explanation / Answer
Let us take DVD Player for example. The DVD Player has many controls on it such as play, stop, pause, rewind, forward, next, previous, etc. Each control on the DVD player is a button that is not hard to press. Sometimes instead of buttons, a touch display is used in which case one has to just touch the area that is marked for the purpose. Incase of Computer Interfaces, A button is a highlighted area that describes an action. When the user moves the mouse towards it and clicks it, the system responds back by doing the action programmed for the button. In this case as well, the moitor can be a touch screen which means one has to touch the button area.
There is'nt much difference between the actual DVD Player and the computer system interface if we view in terms of button. But when we move to other controls such as menus, we see enormous difference. Suppose there are certain items such as Item1, Item2, Item3 and Item4. Each item is a group and they have 3 sub items each. On a physical DVD Player, this will be displayed in a tabular format with a total of 12 buttons. The same if we try to do in computer interface, we can go for a menu that has the four items initially and wehn you hover over each item, it shows the 3 sub items related to it. The method od hiding details and showing them only when needed allows for a cleaner and pleasant display which is what User Interface is all about.
