Question
Exercise 1.8 The Pentium 4 Prescott processor released in 2004, had a clock rate of 3.6 GHz and a voltage of 1.25V. Assume that, on average, it consumed 10 W of static power and 90 W of dynamic power The Core i5 vy Bridge, released in 2012, had a clock rate of 3.4 GHz and voltage of 0.9 V. Assume that, on average, it consumed 30 W of static power and 40 W of dynamic power 1.8.1 For each processor find the average capacitive loads. 1.8.2 Find the percentage of the total dissipated power comprised by static power and the ratio of static power and dynamic power for each technology 1.8.3 If the total dissipated power is to be reduced by 10%, how much should the voltage be reduced to maintain the same leakage current? Note: power is defined as the product of voltage and current.Explanation / Answer
a) Average Capacitive loads:
Capacitive-Load = (2 x Dynamic Power) / (Frequency x Voltage2)
Capacitive-Load(Pentium 4)= (2 x 90) / (3.6 x 109x 1.252) = 3.2 x 10-8
Capacitive-Load(core i5)= (2 x 40) / (3.4 x 109x 0.92) = 2.9 x 10-8
b) ForPentium 4: Total Power consumed by static power = (static Power/total power)=10 / 100 = %10
=> ratio = static power /Dynamic power=10/90 = 1/9
Fore (corei5)3: Total Power consumed by static power = (static Power/total power)=30 / 70 = %43
=> ratio = static power /Dynamic power=30/40 = 3/4
c)
For Pentium 4:
the total dissipated power = Voltage x leakage current(I)
100 = 1.25 x I
I = 80A
The Power should be reduced by 10%,therefore it 90% of total power=the total dissipated power * 0.9
100*0.9= 90W
Total dissipated power = Voltage x leakage current(I)
90 = 1.25 x 80, = 0.9
The Voltage should be 1.1375v
For Corei5:
70 = 0.9 x I(leakage Current)
I = 77.77A=78(approx)
The Power should be reduced by 10%,therefore it 90% of total power=the total dissipated power * 0.9
70*0.9= 63W
Total dissipated power = Voltage x leakage current(I)
63 = 0.9 x 78, = 0.9
The Applied Voltage should be 0.81v,for the power to reduce by 10%.
