Question

The following is the description of the project I am currently working on. Can you advise me what class D amplifier I should use and how should I use it? It would be getting a digital signal input and is supposed to output the received the digital signal to the speakers. Sincere advice and explanation would be appreciated.

Project: Design and construct a microprocessor controlled system capable of digitally transmitting a stereo audio signal by modulating an inexpensive laser. The receiver shall drive the output speakers with Class D amplifiers.

Explanation / Answer

Since, this is a design problem, the equipments that you choose depends on the specifications like power rating, supply voltage, efficiency etc. Digikey is a reasonable electronic shopping platform whereby you can search for your required components, compare the prices for different manufacturers etc. http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/tpa2012d2.pdf . This is the link to the data sheet of a typical Class D Audio Power Amplifier manufactured by Texas Instruments. https://www.digikey.com/catalog/en/partgroup/class-d-amplifier/16701 If you go to this link, you can find several other Class D amplifiers. Have a look at the ratings of each device you search for in Digikey like Maximum Output Power, Voltage supply etc. Choose the amplifier according to the output power desired and the voltage supply. Texas Instruments manufactured ICs should be a good choice. After you decide the IC based on the rating, have a look at the data sheet. Please go through the document very closely and carefully and be careful of the input voltages you shall be applying to the chip. The ICs are quite sensitive and they burn out easily if volatges and currents beyond the range flow through them. The data sheet lists out the pin configurations and what components should be attached to these pins. Please go through the typical applications and design procedure thoroughly. This will give you the value or range of passive elements like resistors or capacitors that need to be connected to the respective pins. As an example go to Page 18 of the data sheet for TPA2012D2 and you can find a schematic of the application that shows how the chip is used to amplify a signal.
