QUESTION 3 a. Discuss the need for storage in an energy system. b. Using supercapacitors, design a regenerative braking system to enable a 20,000kg bus (6 marks) travelling at 50km/h to come to a stop in ten seconds. State all assumptions made. 6 marks) QUESTION 4 a. A photovoltaic cell with an area of 100cm2 has a reverse saturation current of 102Acm. Ir it produces a short-circuit current of 40mAcm2 at 25 degrees C and full sun, find the open- circuit voltage at full sun and also at fifty percent full sunlight. State all assumptions made. (6 marks) Describe how you would use the photovoltaic cell described in Que.4a in the design of an 8kW PV system in your home. State all assumptions made. b. 6 marks)Explanation / Answer
3.a. We have to make more use of renewable energiy source like solar energy, wind energy, hydral energy to reduce our reliance on non-renewable energies like fossil energy such as gas, oil. Also we need a secure and reliable energy supply for 24 hours a day. But it is not really easy task to just switch over to using solar and wind for all our energy needs for daily purposes. It is because of uncertainty of our nature. this means renewable energies are not always available when needed.
The solution of this situation is using storage of energy generated.By storing the generated energy from renewable energy sources we can have a 24 hours uninterraptable powersupply for our daily needs wihout polluting the earth.
