Applications of transformers: transformer is a static electric device which is used to convert electrical supply from one voltage level to another voltage level.
1. Power transformer: power transformer is high rating large size transformer which is used to step up generated voltage more than 33kv at generating stations.
2.Distribution Transformer: This type of transformers are basically step down transformers which are used to distribute supply at low voltage 220/110 volts.
Instrument transformers: Following transformers comes under the category of instrument transformers
3.Measurement Transformer: Measurement transformer is used to measure voltage and current. These transformers are known as potential transformer and current transformer.
4.Protection Transformer:Current transformer and potential transformers are also used protection of the system the difference between measurement C.T ,P.T and protection C.T, P.T is that protection instrument transformers are more accurate.
C.T and P.T gives protection to the devices connected to the high voltage sytem with the help of relay. when a fault or disturbance in system voltage or current takes place P.T and C.T steps dwn voltage and current disturbance respectively to a certain ratio. we know that it is easy to measure low values of voltage and current so by using instrument tranformers we steps down fault voltage and current. now by sensing this abnormality relay works and trips the circuit if if abnormality is more that cut off.
protection type potential and current transformers have high current carrying capability and insulation level. since these devices have to bear many times voltage and or current than rating of measurement transformers.
