Question

After a rain shower, a thin film of sphalt oil floats on the rainwater. Sunlightis incident normally and creates a reflection that appears greenish. If  noil = 1.40, nair = 1.0, and nwater = 1.33, estimate the minumin thickness of the oil. (Be sure to state/indicate phase changes).

Explanation / Answer

As we know that

Wavelength = 2*thickness*refractive index of Oil

For Greenish wavelength = 520*10^-9 m approx

Therefore

Thickness = (520*10^-9)/(2*1.4)

= 185.71*10^-9 m

= 185.71 nm
