Question
Two blocks with masses m1 = 1.40 kg and m2 = 2.90 kg are connected by a massless string, as shown in the Figure. They are released from rest. The coefficent of kinetic friction between the upper block and the surface is 0.210. Assume that the pulley has a negligible mass and is frictionless, and calculate the speed of the blocks after they have moved a distance 24.0 cm.

Assume that the pulley has a negligible mass and is frictionless, and calculate the speed of the blocks after they have moved a distance 24.0 cm.Explanation / Answer
T - u*m1*g = m1*a
T = m1*a + u*m1*g
for m2
m2*g - T = m2*a
m2*g -m1*a - u*m1*g = m2*a
a = (m2-u*m1)*g /(m2+m1) = ((2.9-(0.21*1.4))*9.8)/(2.9+1.4) = 5.9393 m/s^2
V^2- u^2 = 2*a*s
V = sqrt(2*a*s) = sqrt(2*5.9393*0.24)= 1.6885 m/s
