Question

A cannon is rigidly attached to a carriage,which can move without friction along horizontal rail but is connected to a post by a large spring,initially unstretched,with a force constant k=2.00x10^4N/m  The cannon fires a 200 kg. shellat a velocity of 125 m/s directed at an angle of 45 degrees above the horizontal.

Consider a system of consisting of the the cannon,the carriage and the shell. Is the horizontal componant of the momentum of this system conserved during the firing(before the spring has time to stretch appreciably? Why or why not? What about the vertical componant  of the system's momentum?

If the mass of the cannon and carriage is 5000kg, find the recoil speed of the cannon after firing.

Determine the maximum extension of the spring and find the maximum force the spring exerts on the cannon.

Explanation / Answer

v_C = mv_bcos45 = 200*125/5000*cos45 = 3.535 ms^-1

x^2 = m/k *v_c^2 = 5000*3.535^2/20000 = 3.124

x = 1.77 m
