Question
Please show how you got the answer: I will rate 5 stars if correct.
Three point charges are arranged along the x axis. Charge q1 = -4.95nC is located at x = 0.243m and charge q2 = 2.23nC is at x = -0.324m . A positive point charge q3 is located at the origin. What must the value q3 of be for the net force on this point charge to have magnitude 4.23 mu N ? Part B What is the direction of the net force on q3? Part C Where along the x axis can q3 be placed and the net force on it be zero, other than the trivial answers of x = + infinity and x = - infinity?Explanation / Answer
let the point on the x axis be (-x,0)
so we just need to balance the electric field due to all the charges.so,
balancing the charges,
4.95/(0.243+x)^2=2.23/(x-0.324)^2
or x=1.48 m
so the point is (-1.48,0)
