Question

Competitive divers pull their limbs in and curl up their bodies when they do flips. Just before entering the water, they fully extend their limbs to enter straight down. Explain the effect of both actions on their angular velocities. Also explain the effect on their angular momenta

Competitive divers pull their limbs in and curl up their bodies when they do flips. Just before entering the water, they fully extend their limbs to enter straight down. Explain the effect of both actions on their angular velocities. Also explain the effect on their angular momenta

Explanation / Answer

Since the change in angular momentum due to gravity is not considerable,we neglect the force of gravity on the divers, their angular momenta is conserved.

Therefore Since,

Iw=constant

where, I is moment of inertia

w is angular momenta

where The following effects occur:

1)Curling the body: The moment of inertia of the body decreases and so the angular momenta increases.

2)Extend their limbs:The moment of inertia of the body increase and so the angular momenta decreases.
