Question

Urgent!!!!

Eight positive charges (of magnitude Q) are arranged around the edge of a circle centered at the origin as shown in the figure to the right. What is the direction of the electric field at the origin due to this charge arrangement? How would the direction and magnitude of the electric field at the origin change if the radius of the circle on which the charges lie is increased? What if the radius of the circle is decreased? Is the electric potential at the origin less than greater, greater than, or equal to zero? How would the magnitude of the electric potential at the origin change if the radium of the circle on which the charges lie is increased? What if the radius of the circle is decreased? Suppose that only charge 1 was removed from the charge arrangement, in what direction would the electric field as the origin point? Would the magnitude of the electric potential increase, decrease, or stay the same if charge 1 was removed? Suppose that charges I, 3, 5, and 7 were removed from the charge arrangement, in what direction would the electric field at the origin point? Would the magnitude of the electric potential increase, decrease, or stay the same if charges 1, 3, 5, and 7 were removed?

Explanation / Answer

1.The electric field at origin is equal to zero.

2.As the electric field at origin is zero either increasing or decreasing the radius won't have any effect. It would still remain zero.

3.Electric potential is a scalar and will add up due to all charges to become positive.

4.V=kQ/r So,if radius is increased potential will decrease and if radius is decreased potential will increase.

5.Along positive y direction i.e. upward direction.

6.Magnitude of electric potential will decrease.

7.The electric field will again turn out to be zero.

8.Magnitude of electric potential will decrease.
