Question

I had a finals physics test with this question and was unsure how to approach it during the test. I came home and retried to figure it out, but was unable. I did not write the question down, but I remember the key parts. Any guidance would be appreciated:

                      There are two molecules in an HCl molecule. The larger Cl atom (mass=58.9E-24) remains stationary as the smaller Hydrogen atom (mass=1.67E-24) oscillates about the Cl atom at a frequency of 8.66E13 Hz. Find the period in femtoseconds that it takes for one complete oscillation cycle. Find the spring constant and find the velocity.

Explanation / Answer

T = 1/f = 1/8.66E13=1.15E-14 s

T = 2 pi sqrt(m/k)

1.15E-14=2*pi*sqrt(1.67E-24/k)

k=4.99E5 N/m
