Question

Larry tosses a volleyball to his wife, Lise, who catches it at the same height from which it was tossed. The volleyball travels a horizontal distance of 10 meters, and has a maximum height of 4 meters.

a. how long was the ball in the air?

b. what was the initial horizontal velocity?

c. what was the initial vertical velocity?

d. what was the magnitude and direction of the ball's velocity when caught by Lisa. Give the angle as the number of degrees below the horizontal.

e. what ws the acceleration of the volleyball after 1 second? Give the magnitude and direction.

Explanation / Answer

First part c

c) max height is when vy = 0

0 = v0y^2 + 2 a y

voy = sqrt(2*9.81*4)= 8.86 m/s

now part a)

a)

first find time to max height

v = v0y + at =0

t = 8.86/9.81=0.903

time in air = 2*time to max height = 2*0.903=1.806 s

b) x = v0x t

vox = x/t = 10/1.806=5.54 m/s

d) vy will now be negative of initial

so vy = -8.86 m/s

so mag = sqrt(8.86^2 + 5.52^2)= 10.44

direction = arctan( 8.86/5.52)=58.08 degrees

e) a = accel to gravity = 9.81 m/s^2 downwards
