Three uniform thin rods, each of length L = 29 cm, form an inverted U (See Figure below). Each of the vertical rods have a mass of 14 g, while the horizontal rod has mass of 50 g. Where is the center of mass of the assembly (x, y)?

I know the x-coordinate is 14.5, that's common sense.. not sure how to get the y-coordinate?

Explanation / Answer

Multiply the masses by the center of the length and add those values up, then divide by the sum of the masses. Keep in mind that the Length/Height of the 50g bar is zero, in respect to the Y axis, for effective purposes. That should give you about 5.2cm.

Ycenter=(M1*L/2+M2*0+M3*L/2)/(M1+M2+M3)
