In individuals with celiac disease, the immune response to gluten to causes the flattening of the villi in the small intestine. How would this affect the ability of the small intestine function? Celiac disease is genetic autoimmune disease in which the ingestion of gluten causes the damage to small intestine. This damage included the shortened villi length. These fingers like projection help in absorption of nutrients. It is termed as malabsorption (nutrient absorption decreased). When villi get damaged the nutrients will not absorb into body. Treatment of this disease is celiac free diet and intestine will heal few weeks.
