A long, straight wire lies along the z -axis and carries a 4.20- A current in the +z - direction. Find the magnetic field (magnitude and direction) produced at the following points by a 0.400- mm segment of the wire centered at the origin. x = 2.00 m, y = 0, z = 0 Enter your answers numerically separated by commas. x = 0, y = 2.00 m, z = 0 Enter your answers numerically separated by commas. x = 2.00 m, y = 2.00 m, z = 0 Enter your answers numerically separated by commas. x = 0, y = 0, z = 2.00 m

Explanation / Answer

I think you have done a mistake in converting units.

a) r=2i

Biot-Savart law B=(10^-7)(i dl X r))/r^3

= 10^-7(4.2*0.0004)(sin 90)/2^2

By = 4.2X10^-11 T

Bx=Bz=0

b) r= 2 j, So B(kXj)=-i, Therefore Bx=-4.2X10^-11 T, By=Bz=0

c) r= 2 i+2j so Bxr=B(2i-2j) ( cross product)

so B=(10^-7)(4.2X0.0004)(2 i- 2j)/(22.62) ( here r=sqrt(2^2+2^2))

= (1.49 i- 1.49 j)X10^-11 T

SO Bx=1.49X10^-11, By=-1.49X 10-11, Bz=0
