Question

A roller coaster car of mass 250 kg has a speed of v0 = 12 m s-1 at point A, located at a height
of h = 15 m. The car can move with no friction acting between points A and B.

(a) Find the speed of the car when it reaches
point B. Use energy ideas.

(b) Once past point B, the car feels a friction
force of 2000 N. How far from point B does
the car travel before coming to rest?

Explanation / Answer

a). from energy conservation; K.E. at A + gravitational P.E. at A = K.E. at B => 0.5*250*12^2 + 250*9.8*15 = 0.5*250*v^2 => v = 20.928 m/s b). retardation = F/m = 2000/250 = 8 m/s^2 v^2 - u^2 = 2*a*s => 0 - (20.928)^2 = 2*(-8)*s => s = 27.274 m
