Question

a) Two concentric circular wire loops on a table top carry currents. The smaller loop of diameter 8.84 cm carries a current of 6.03A. The larger loop has a diameter 12.4cm. What is the current in the larger loop if the total magnetic field at the center is zero.

b) If a solenoid of say N turns carries a current say 1 Amp in the CCW direction. What is the Direction of the toatl magnetic field of all turns in unit vector terms?

Explanation / Answer

The B-field at the center of a circular loop of radius "r" and current "i" is;

B = ui/2r

The field is along the axis , one way for counterclockwise current and the other direction for clockwise current.

So, assume the current in the large loop is in the opposite direction and the set its field equal to the field of the small loop;

uI/2R = ui/2r

R = rI/i
