Question

1. A 2.0 cm tall object is placed 80.0 cm to the left of ascreen. You want to use a thin converging lens with a +15.0cm focal length to form a real image of this object onto thescreen.
a.) At what two locations should the lensbe placed to form real images of the object on the screen?
b.) What is themagnification in each of these two cases? (twodifferent numbers)
c.) For each of these two cases,is the image upright or inverted? How can youtell?

At what two locations should the lens be placed to form real images of the object on the screen? What is the magnification in each of these two cases? (two different numbers) For each of these two cases, is the image upright or inverted?

Explanation / Answer

y = 2 cm

f = 15 cm

let u is the object distance and v is the image distance

u+v = 80 cm

==> u = 80-v

we know

1/u + 1/v = 1/f

1/(80-v) +1/v = 1/15

v+80-v/(80-v)*v = 1/15

v*(80-v)/(80) = 15

80*v - v^2 = 1200

v^2 -80*v +1200 = 0

v = 20 cm or 60 cm

so, lense should be placed at u = 60 cm or 20 cm from the object
b)m = -v/u = -20/60 = -1/3

or m = -v/u = -60/20 = -3

c)

in both cases image is inverted
