Question

Here is a screenshot of parts i and ii. Please help I missed 2 consective weeks with illness and need help catching up!!! I do not need a whole lesson, just the work on how to solve.

An m1 = 8.0 kg box lies on a frictionless table, and is attached to a m2 = 5.0 kg box by a light cord passing over a rotating pulley. The pulley has a mass of 3.6 kg and a radius of 0.40 m. Just as the system is released, find: the linear acceleration of the masses the tension in the cord both above and below the pulley.

Explanation / Answer

5)

let T is the tension in the string.

net force on m2, F2 = m2*g - T

m2*a = m2*g - T

==> T = m2*g - m2*a --(1)

net force on m1, F1 = T

m1*a = T --(2)

from equations 1 and 2

m1*a = m2*g - m2*a

==> a = m2*g/(m1+m2) = 3.77 m/s^2

T = m1*a = 8*3.77 = 30.15 N
