Question
A cat walks along a uniform plank that is 4.00m long and has a mass of 6.50kg (Figure 1) . The plank is supported by two sawhorses, one 0.440m from the left end of the board and the other 1.50m from its right end. If the cat has a mass of 2.8kg, how close to the right end of the two-by-four can it walk before the board begins to tip?
A cat walks along a uniform plank that is 4.00m long and has a mass of 6.50kg (Figure 1) . The plank is supported by two sawhorses, one 0.440m from the left end of the board and the other 1.50m from its right end. If the cat has a mass of 2.8kg, how close to the right end of the two-by-four can it walk before the board begins to tip?Explanation / Answer
m=Mass of the cat=2.8 kg
r=distance cat can travel
M=Mass of the board=6.5
R=distance of mg from place of rotation
mg is always in the center of the board, so it is at the 2m mark.
The board sticks out 1.5m, so from the right sawhorse (place of rotation), the board's mass is at 0.5 m
Therefore, R=0.5
If net torque is zero, torque of cat - torque of the board= 0
mr - MR = 0
2.8 r - 6.5*0.5=0
r =1.16 This is the cat's distance from the point of rotation.
he needs to be to the right tip.
at
d =1.5 -1.16=0.34m
