Question
I need these two answered within the next 45 minutes if possible:
1.) A 256 Hz tuning fork produces the first harmonic in a tube filled with air and having one closed and one open end. If the tube were filled with helium where the speed of sound is 965 m/sec, what frequency would be needed to produce the first harmonic? Assume the speed of air at the same temperature is 330 m/sec.
2.) If a guitar string has a tension of 20 newtons and has a mass per unit length of 9.8x10^-4 kg/m, with what speed does a pulse travel down the string?
Explanation / Answer
1) f = v/4*L
256 = 965/(4*L)
L = 965/(4*256) = 0.9424 m
f = v/(4*L) = 330/(4*0.9424) = 87.54 Hz
2)
v = sqrt(T/d) = sqrt(20/(9.8*10^-4)) = 142.86 m/s
