Question

6. “Blitz questions" (18 points total, 3 points each) Give one-, maxinmm four-sentence answers. (Some questions may require only two- word answers.) Provide diagrams only ifrequested. a). Name one of the most significant technological milestones in the development of modern optical commmnication networks. Briefly explain what kind of opportunities did the technology offer to the network performance. b). What is the manifestation of the quantum nature of light (which experimental observations indicate the presence of quantum nature)? c). Which atomic transition is in the basis of operation of a laser diode? d). How many Mach-Zender modulators are needed in order to encode 2 bits per symbol? e). Name three kind of materials used in lasers. f). What is the wavelength selective switch (WSS), what is it used for? Verbal explanation will suffice.

Explanation / Answer

a) Optical Fibre is the most significant technological milestones in Optical communication. It provided lossless communication and thus enhanced the performance. Quantum Observer has been the latest milestone explaining the dual nature in a quantum state.

b) The quantum model of the atom is much more complex than we had previously learned. Electrons, instead of orbiting the nucleus like planets, orbit in less defined, blurred, or cloud-like formations. Also, the definitive configurations we learned through the electron series (citing the numbers of electrons in each given outer shell) are actually more like probabilities than hard and fast formations.Quantum nature of light defines the term quantum physics so that you understand that its purpose is to show the statistical probability of the electron's location at any given moment. Combining with "the nature of light," it holds a clear explanation of the working.

C. In a laser diode structure, the two ends are optically reflective. One end is fully reflective whereas another end is partially reflective. The light generated in the p-n junction will bounce back and forth (hundreds of times) between the two reflective surfaces. As a result, an enormous optical gain is achieved. The light generated due to the stimulated emission is escaped through the partially reflective end of the laser diode to produce a narrow beam laser light.

d. One Mach - Zender is used to encode 2 bits per symbol.

e. Collimators, Optical Source, Reflective mirrors, Optical FIbres, Etalon, Brewster Windows.

f. Wavelength Selective Switch dynamically routes, blocks and attenuates all DWDM wavelengths within a network node.
