1. 10 Points Apply your knowledge of units and use the conversion charts included in this exam to solve the following problem first by using English units and then verify the result by using the other system of unit. Magnetic and electrical units are largely the same under both systems of units. Suppose it is desired to find the voltage induced in a conductor 12 in. long that is moving at right angles to a uniform magnetic field of 30,000 lines per sq. in., and the velocity of the conductor is 50 ft. per sec. In an orderly and easy-to-follow manner, calculate for the voltage induced in the conductor first under the English units and the under the other system.

Explanation / Answer

length of conductor = l =12 inch=0.305m

magnetic field = B =30000 lines per sq in=0.465 T

Velocity = v =50 ft. per sec=15.24 m/s

Voltage induced under standard unit system:

V= Blv=2.16 V

Voltage induced under english units:

V=12*30000*50=18*10^6 lines*ft/ sq. sec
