Mention two applications for the PN junction diodes. 2 points Compare between the PN Junction diode and the MS diode in the following: b. c. 2 points i. Material used in each ii. Switching speed. Explain why? d. Compare between the Zener diode and the regular diode in terms of the following: 2 points i. Break down voltage value ii. Application e. Draw the DC model for the Zener diode in the Zener region (breakdown region). 1 pointExplanation / Answer
A.
1.
N type materials are those which semiconductors which are doped with pentavalent atoms (donor) and thus have excess of free electrons. Therefore the have electrons as majority carrier and holes as minority carrier.
The p type material is doped with trivalent or acceptor atoms and hence have less number of electrons and more number of holes. Hence thr majority carriers are hole and the minority carriers are electrons in ptype material.
2. Atoms having five electrons in valence shell like phosphorus arsenic etc are donors whereas atoms with 3 electrons in valence shell like boron or aluminum are used as acceptors.
3. Typical intrinsic carrier concentratiom for silicon is 1.45 x 10^10 per cm^3 at room temperature.
