Question
10. In a server, the processor accounts for 50% of total server power, the memory system accounts for 30%, the disk accounts for 10%, and miscellaneous components account for the remaining 10%. You have a $500 budget to upgrade your server to make it more power- efficient. You plan to either replace your memory module with a new memory module or your disk with a new disk. With that budget, you can either purchase a new memory module that consumes 20% less power than your old memory module, or a new disk that consumes 40% less power than your old disk. Which of the two will you purchase if you were only concerned with reducing your server's power consumption? (15 points)Explanation / Answer
For a server ,
Power consumption of processor = 50 % of total power
Power consumption of memory system = 30 %
Power consumption of disk = 10 %
Power consumption of miscellaneous = 10 %
Budget for power reduction = $ 500 which can purchase either a new memory module or a new disk.
New memory module reduces power consumption by 20%.
Total Powe reduction by upgradation of a part = Percentage reduction by upgrading a part x Percentage of total server cosumption by that part
Total power reduction using new memory module = 20 % of 30%
= 20/100 x 30 /100 = 6%
New disk reduces power consumption by 40%
Total power reduction using new disk = 40 % of 10%
= 40/100 x 10/100
= 4%
Since purchasing a new memory module gives 6% reduction in power consumption as comparison to 4% reduction in power by replacing old disk by new disk.
So, I will purchase new memory module for reducing server power consumption.
