HOMEWORK #1

Record your energy consumption from a day and list all sources of energy consumption. Calculate price of electricity for that day. (Refer Slide 8 from lecture 1)

•Q1: Record your daily energy use

•Pick a day and record your energy consumption (itemized consumption)

•Transportation: 118 kWh/day

•Daily driving distance: 70 miles/person-day

•Gallon: 70 miles/person-day / (20 mile/gallon) = 3.5 gallon/person-day

•Energy for commute: 3.5 gallon/person-day × 33.7 kWh/gallon = 67.4 kWh/person-day

•Electrical energy: 29.9 kWh

•Microwave + Rice cooker: 1.1 kW * 24 hr = 26 kWh

•TV + laptop + bulb: 150 W * 2 hr + 100 W * 10 hr + 60 W * 3 hr= 1.5 kWh

•Refrigerator: 100 W * 24 hr = 2.4 kWh

•Total energy consumption = 148 kWh

•Average power consumption = 6.2 kW

2. For energy consumption recorder in Q1, determine cost of gasoline powered generation. i.e., if you were to substitute electricity with gasoline, what would the cost for same energy be considering that gasoline contains about 40 kWh/gallon

3. I want to expend "100 calories" (that is, 100kcal) of energy working out on an exercise machine. The readout on the machine says I'm expanding energy at the rate of 270W. How long do I need to exercise to expend those 100 k cal?

4. From Q1 estimate energy consumption for a month and convert recorded energy from kWh to Watts. Also estimate your electricity bill using Time-Of-Use (TOU) price from http://www.srpnet.com/prices/home/tou.aspx

Explanation / Answer

2. Total energy consumption = 148kWh

one gallon gasoline = 40kWh

therefore cost of gasoline required= 148/40 = 3.7 gallon

3. 270 joules of energy spending in 1 sec

100*4184 joules of energy will spend in=100*4184/270 = 1549.6 seconds = 25.8 minutes

4. Energy consumption for a month = 148*30kWh = 4440 kWh = 4440*1000 kWh/(24*30)h = 6166.6 watt.

Electricity bill per kWh= $0.0711 (winter off peak rates)

therefore total bill = 4440*0.0711= $315.6
