Question
Lab Activity V: Synthesis challenge A. Obtain a commercially made coil of wire. (It should have a base unit with two terminals.) As you Winding a coil have seen, a single loop of wire acts as a small magnet when current flows through it. stronger magnetic field. The commercial col with many loops of wire is a way to produce functions ns a magnet when electric current is passing through it se a compass, power supply, connecting wires, and the coil itself to determine how the coil wound, n other words, if current comes into one of the terminals, figure out whether it travels clockwise or Ensplettion, instcad use your knowledge of the direction of the field produced by an electric current. Explain. Top view wise as it moves through the windings to reach the other terminal. Don't rely on a visual Top view Which diagram best illustrates the internal winding of your solenoid? B. Obtain a microammeter. This is a device to measure current. When current enters the positive terminal of the microammeter and exits the negative terminal, the needle will deflect to the right. Set the power supply aside at this point. You no longer need it. Connect the coil and the microammeter to create a loop circuit. Be sure to record which terminal of your solenoid is connected to which terminal of your ammeter ***Never connect the power supply to the microammeter!*** Once you have the coil and microammeter connected, call over your instructor. She will perform an experiment in which a magnet is moved into or out of the coil. The magnet is disguised so that you do not know which end is the north pole. Your challenge is to use your observation of the needle on the microammeter to figure out whether the marked end of the magnet is a north pole or a south pole. Record any information, sketches, observations, etc. below so that you can complete your mini- report.Explanation / Answer
A. from the given two designs
if the compass needle (red end) turns towards the cross section of the solenoid in front of us, then the magnetic field of the solenoid is comeing out of this end of the solenoid ( North pole)
Hence, then current is flowing CCW, so if the red end of the battery is connected to left terminal of the solenoid, then it is the left diagram that depicts the internal winding of the solenoid
B. let the left end of the left coil inthe diagram be connected to the +ve (red) terminal of microammeter
so when current enters the ammeter at this junction, there is deflection to right
so for clockwise current, deflection to right
Now, we dont know the polarity of the magnet
so, when the magnet is brought near the face of solenoid, if ther eis deflection to right, then indiced current is clockwise
hence
induced magnetic field is into the page
so bringing the magnet closer is increasing the flux into the coil
hence this pole of magnet is north pole of the magnet
if this was south pole of the magnet, while bringing it closer to the solenoid face, it will increase flux out of the page in the solenoid
this will induce CCE current in the coil from lenz' law
hence
the deflection would be to the left in the microammeter
