Question
Need solution in terms of statistical physics.
Assume that we have an ideal gas in a large container of volume V kept at temperature T. Let us assume that there is a very small aperture of area S, at the boundary of the container. As a result, particles can escape from this hole, this is called effusion. We make the approximation that for a short time interval, since the aperture has small area, the equilibrium distribution of the gas is not affected by the escaping particles. Under this assumption, calculate the rate of escape from the aperture. Of course in the long time, the number of particles as well as the temperature of the system will change and this becomes a more complex problem.Explanation / Answer
