Question

A tank of water sits at the edge of a table of height 1.3 m. The tank springs a very small leak at its base, and water sprays out a distance of 1.7 m from the edge of the table. What is the water level h in the tank? (Assume the tank is open to the air at the top.)

Explanation / Answer

range of water = 1.7m,

assuming v as velocity of water at the point of hole;

1.7=v*t,

vetical displacement of water in the same time s= 1.3m,

=> t = sqrt(2s/g) = 0.51sec,

=>v= 1.7/0.51 = 3.3m/s,

accoring to the equation of flow h=(v^2)/2g;

=> h = (3.3^2)/2*9.8 = 0.5557m = 55.57cm
