Question

Help: I know the directions but my numbers keep coming out wrong for the magnitude.

Your response differs significantly from the correct answer. Rework your solution from the beginning and check each step carefully. N direction      attractive repulsive                       Two small identical conducting spheres are placed with their centers 0.80 m apart. One is given a charge of 1.2 10-8 C, the other a charge of ?2.4 10-8 C. (a) Find the electrostatic force exerted on one sphere by the other.

Explanation / Answer

a) Force is attractive

F = 9*10^9 * 1.2 *(- 2.4) * 10^-16 / (0.8)^2

So F = -3.7125 * 10^ -6 N (attractive)

b) Net charge on each sphere after connection = q1 + q2 / 2

ie -1.2 * 10^-8 C

Now repulsive due to negative on both

F = 9 * 10^9 * (-1.2) * (-1.2) * 10^-16 / (0.8)^2

So F = 2.025 * 10^-6 N (repulsive)
