Question
Two students measured the time it takes for a 200gm glider to travel 50cm from rest. Their data for DeltaT was as follows: .715sec, .716sec, .714sec. what was the mass of the decending weight, M1. The answer is 50 Grams, show the equation process to this answer.
There is a horizontal air track with a 200 g glider on it.
A thread is connected from it over a very light pulley and the thread has a weight M1 suspended on it.
The glider is released and the time taken for it to move 50 cm is recorded.
Explanation / Answer
we will use the average time =0.716 s
it covers 50 cm in 0.716 seconds
0.5*a*0.716^2 = 50/100
a= 1.95
acceleration = F/M = mg/(M+m)......m= mas og weight ,M is mass of glider
1.95 = m*9.8/(200+m)
m = 49. 68 grams = 50 grams
