Question

Please help to clearly explain AND solve the solution to this problem on a SEPARATE PAPER. Thank you very much :)

The diagrams at right show a long, straight wire through which there is a current I. (Both a side view and a top view of the wire are shown.) Indicate the direction of the magnetic field at point A on both views of the wire. A positively charged particle is located near a current-carrying wire. Determine the direction of the magnetic force on the particle if it is moving as described in each of the four diagrams below. If the magnetic force on the particle has zero magnitude, indicate that explicitly.

Explanation / Answer

1.) Use right hand thumb rule,

i) direction of magnetic field is into the page at A (side view)

ii)direction of magnetic field is downwards at A (top view)

2. i) Particle at A is stationary

=> 0 magnetic force because the particle is not moving

ii) Particle at A is moving towards top of the page

=> Direction of force is towards the left of the page. (west)

iii) Particle at A is moving into the pade

=> 0 magnetic force because both the velocity vector and the magnetic field vectors are in the same direction i.e. into the page and their cross product is 0

iv) Particle at A is moving towards point B

=> the direction of the magnetic force would be towards north-west
