Question

The drawing shows three particles far away from any other objects and located on a straight line. The masses of these particles are mA = 363 kg, mB = 517 kg, and mC =154 kg. Find the magnitude and direction of the net gravitational force acting on each of the three particles (let the direction to the right be positive).

Explanation / Answer

Assuming from left to right are: A, B and C.
Gravitational force is always attractive in nature and the force b/w any two bodies is independent of a third body.
On A, gravitational force acts in the right direction since both B and C are to the left of it.(So positive)

On B, gravitational force acts on the right due to C and towards the left due to A. Find the net force(the difference) and that's your answer. If it's greater due to A then it's negative otherwise positive.

On C, gravitational force acts towards left and is always negative(the direction).

The gravitational force is G(m1)(m2)/(r^2)

G is the unversal gravitational constant.
m1 and m2 are the masses of the object.
r^2 is the square of the distance between the centers of the two objects.
