Question

Note: This problem assumes a basic understanding of an ideal gas. A cylinder with a diameter of 4.95 cm has a movable piston attached to a spring as shown in Figure P.40. The cylinder contains 1.41 liters of an ideal gas at 19.9

Note: This problem assumes a basic understanding of an ideal gas. A cylinder with a diameter of 4. 95 cm has a movable piston attached to a spring as shown in Figure P. 40. The cylinder contains 1. 41 liters of an ideal gas at 19. 9 degree C and 1. 05 atm pressure. After the gas is heated briefly and allowed to expand, it is found that the spring compresses 3. 50 cm and the temperature of the gas increases to 105 degree C.

Explanation / Answer

Change in volume can be calculated easily as it is given that the piston is moved by 3.5cm..

change in volume = pi*r^2 * 3.5

= 3.14*2.5 *2.5 * 3.5 = 68.6875 ml

b)we can apply the formula

P1V1/T1 = P2V2/T2

P1 = 1.05

P2 = ?

V1= 1.41

V2 = 1.41 + 0.06868

T1= 19.9 + 273 = 292.9K

T2 = 105 +273 = 378 k

We get P2 = 1.2922 atm pressure

c) we know that Pressure = Force/Area

1 atm = 101,300 Pa

1.2922 * 101300 = Force/(pi*2.5 * 2.5)

Force = K* x

where K is spring constant and x is elongation = 3.5cm

find K
