Question
The figure below gives, as a function of time t, the force component Fx that acts on a 2.85 kg ice block that can move only along the x axis. At t = 0, the block is moving in the positive direction of the axis, with a speed of 2.9 m/s.
(a) What is its speed at t = 11 s?

(b) What is its direction of travel at t = 11?
+x-direction

The figure below gives, as a function of time t, the force component Fx that acts on a 2.85 kg ice block that can move only along the x axis. At t = 0, the block is moving in the positive direction of the axis, with a speed of 2.9 m/s. What is its speed at t = 11 s? What is its direction of travel at t = 11?Explanation / Answer
In this case Fx is a function of time. The idea is to determine how the momentum of the block is altered by Fx(t)dt where we have to integrate because Fx is Fx(t).
You can add the area under the line makeing sure you subtract that area in places Fx is less than zero. I got Fxdt from 0 to 11 = 15
At t= 0 mv = 2.85*2.9 = 8.265
Thus the change in momentum is +15 at t = 11 so 8.265+15 = 23.265
V(11) = 23.265/2.85 = 8.16m/s <---- a)
+ x direction <--------b)
