After collecting Plot a graph on Microsoft Excel for Volume of distillate vs Temperature for the acetone-water mixture. Label the X- and Y-axis and attach the sheet with the report. (1.5 points) Volume ofTemperature Distillate (mL) 3. A mixture of two miscible liquids with a widely different boiling point is distilled. The temperature of distilled liquid is observed to plateau and then drop before rising again. Explain the temperature drop? (1 point)

Explanation / Answer

3. In the mixture of two miscible liquids, the low boiling point liquid will evaporate and increase the temperature up to their boiling point temperature. As the second liquid has the higher boiling point, it will not move up the column before all the components of low boiling liquid are distilled off. So, a temperature drop is observed. Here, the first plateau is the boiling point of the low point boiling liquid and the second one is the increase in temperature of the high point boiling liquid.

4. When distilling a mixture of liquid, do not boil the whole liquid which is known as boiling to dryness. It will cause to explode system or may lead to generate reactive species like peroxides.

5. This is due to the reason that water is filled all the time in the condenser to lower the temperature of vapor of liquid to condense. Otherwise, it will be empty.

6. Boiling chips are the solid substances which have an uneven shape or surface. There are two reasons to add boiling chips:

(1) Prevent superheating of the liquid. (2) Stop bumping of the liquid mixture.

7. As we know from the ideal gas law that pressure is directly proportional to temperature. So, increase or decrease in barometric pressure will increase or decrease the boiling point of the liquid respectively.
